Earth, Polyphonia is a series of photographs that act as a testament to performances experienced during a journey through the Greek landscape. It chronicles various explorations spanning from the virgin forest of Frachto to the North and ultimately ending by a riverbed in Crete to the South. Its initial objective was to further expand the schema set up by the Earth Medley project (2009), in the setting of Kapodistria’s origins and cultural upbringing.

This series materialized following a relocation to Greece in 2010. The ground immediately appeared itself wrought with conflict and contradiction, but a constant attempt eventually revealed a more fragile disposition within the land and water – expressed by its sacred core. A fusion of entities occurs through the intuitive dance of “matter interaction”. Earth, Polyphonia is a manifestation of the continued pursuit to visually capture energy synthesis.

Where: Galleria 814 (814 St. Clair Avenue West)
When: May 1 – May 16, 2010

Featuring photographs by Amanda Arcuri and Ana Kapodistria, Visceral Landscapes explores the intuitive connections between man and nature. Both artists engage in playful ritualistic performances with their environments as they reflect on the rhythmic structures created during the interaction between figure and landscape. By photographing these repetitive gestures, distinctions between what is natural and unnatural become blurred and eventually merge. Visceral Landscapes mediates the temporality of performance and the physical constructs of nature. Curated by Jennifer Tiffin.

Earth Medley is a series of photographs documenting performances within a natural landscape. It focuses on the body’s encounter with space and its subsequent interaction in time. It is an attempt to create a visual representation of the abstract energy in heightened sensation, present during the encounters surrounding living entities – in this instance, the connection between the body and its environment.

The approach embraced an experimental methodology of art-making, and relied upon creating circumstances for an active environment, heavily dependent on the dynamic reactions between three core elements; the figure, the landscape, and the lens. The project involved performances by collaborators and myself, and the former added another reactive element to the environment, intensifying the momentary gestures through shared experience. The resulting images are mostly photographed in long and multiple exposures, often layered, in an attempt to retain a “truer” documentation of the event – referencing the project’s heavy relation to duration. Each performance differs from that previous, retaining only the consistent themes of exploration and interaction, leading to the successive placement of self in space. The exposures act as the only tangible outcome of the piece, an idiosyncratic representation of an idiosyncratic encounter – each frame cannot be replicated, precisely as it cannot be predicted.

Visually, the multiple exposures act to give a sensation of movement and vibration within a still image, giving the impression of an interaction with matter. This allows the presence of the figure to be recorded alongside its absence, in a moment of flux. As the figure participates in this intuitive play along the landscape, the two entities overlap and shape each other, merging. It is through this same layering the image is transformed further from its original form into something more otherworldly. This acts to retain its initial abstract implications of synthesizing energy.

Earth Medley suggests a return to exploration through interaction, to elate in the visceral understanding of space and being.
